New Bird City Project opportunity for the area
Patty Norgaard, Mayor of Crosslake has spearheaded something with the Audubon Society of MN called a Bird City Project.
The Mayors of the cities of Pequot Lakes, Crosslake and Jenkins have been meeting to find a way to work together on this recreational opportunity. The Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Assocation is a community organization which already connects the cities along its scenic byway route. On May 8 there was a meeting at the Crosslake City Hall attended by local birding guide, Judd Brink and PBSBA Chair CIndy Nelson.
At this time the focus will be setting up for Crosslake with the intention to create a Bird City template or model plan for the other cities along the scenic byway to follow. The Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway connects the cities and remains a part of their story. Two examples of this important connection is the annual Christmas Bird Count with Birds of the Byway's Judd Brink and the popular Birds of the Byway brochure and birding checklist. This Birds of the Byway piece is a favorite since bird tourism is becoming very popular in the area.
