Fire Tower Conversation Convened
For release 8/20/2018
In anticipation of the transfer of ownership of the Pequot lakes Fire Tower, Paul Thiede, County Board chairman, will convene a community meeting on Wednesday, September 5, 6:30 p.m. at the Cole Memorial Building in Pequot Lakes.
“All indications are that the Minnesota State Executive Council will convey title to the tower and the adjoining land to the county at its September 14 meeting,” Thiede said.
Interested public and groups that may want to join in the effort to re-open the tower for use by tower enthusiasts are invited to participate. Details of what has transpired leading up to this action will be shared at the meeting. Also plans for the immediate and intermediate securing of the facility and its surroundings will be outlined.
“We are hopeful that once the tower is in county ownership we will be able to accomplish restorations and safety improvements for a potential re-opening for public use by the spring of 2019,” Thiede added. “Of course we will make those necessary changes as soon as possible but we know this has taken longer than anticipated so we are being realistic on when it can actually be opened again.”
Improvements will have to be discussed and designed prior to the re-opening of the cab at the top but restoring the stair treds, railings, and minor improvements to the trail should allow some access before all improvements are accomplished.
Individuals with ideas for what they would like to see and/or suggestions for making it an attraction for the area are encouraged to attend the September 5 meeting.
