The riddle: There are thirteen. Each one full of truth and lore, positioned along the 54 miles of the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway, waiting for your visit.
The answer: Bunyan Truth and Lore Information kiosks!
With spring singing at the door, it’s time to Explore the Lore along the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway. The thirteen information kiosks are made for lore explorers. Some who visit the sites every year call it visiting old friends. Great stories are like old friends; fun, comfortable, welcoming, and always worth the time spent together.
Remember the wild rice story at the Rice Lake kiosk on Nickel Road behind Eagleview School? The real story of wild rice harvesting is right there, but there’s also the Bunyan twist on the story with Babe’s tail doing most of ricing work. Students from the nearby school get a chance to read that one every year. Truth and lore together make the learning go down like a spoonful of sugar.
Nearby at the Paul M. Thiede Fire Tower Park is another truth and lore panel favorite. If you haven’t read about the work the giant bees did to make the tower into a huge wax candle so the lumberjacks could cut wood all night long, or the actual truth about a pet bear named Sassy climbing up into that tower, it’s time to visit that site and get the whole story.
Over in Crosslake, sitting on the lakefront at the parking lot of Moonlite Bay Family Restaurant, is a kiosk that shares a bit of the story of the changing use of waterways, the 1802 Sugar Wars battle site viewable from that spot, and of course the lore of Paul Bunyan fishing with a lure made from a used bathtub and a ship’s anchor.
Spring is still singing at your door!
